SCREENING OF THE FILM GOD LOVES UGANDA
The staff of LGBT International Association is pleased to invite you to the screening of the documentary “God Loves Uganda” at the headquarters of IGLYO, Rue de l’Industrie 10 – Brussels, on November 26th at 6.30 pm.
God Loves Uganda (83mins) describes the activities of the American evangelical movement in Uganda and its leaders who fight “sexual immorality” and sexual “sin” are trying to convert Ugandans to the Christian religion. God Loves Uganda was premiered at the Sundance Film Festival January 18th 2013 and featured in more than 50 American and international film festivals, winning numerous awards.
Roger Ross Williams, the director, talks about the missionary movement in Uganda as “a consequence of the colonial past of Africa of the twenty first centuries, a veritable crusade to create a continent of people in the image and likeness of fundamentalist extremists of America”.
Africa, especially Uganda, is home to a huge presence of homophobia: in recent times, it seems to be trying to resurrect the dreaded Anti-Homosexuality Act; the bill presented by the parliament of David Bahati in 2009, foresaw the application of the death penalty / life imprisonment for LGBT people.
This bill was approved and transformed into law on February 24th 2014, by President Yoweri Museveni. On August 1st, the Constitutional Court of Uganda revoked the bill, but now they are in talks of a revote, with new clauses added to the decree which are even more severe and rigid for the gay community in Uganda.
At the end of the screening of the documentary there will be a small debate where the public can ask questions on the subject.
International LGBT Support will try to explain the causes and roots of this hateful fundamentalist state, illustrating aspects of a terrible law which criminalizes the homosexual community (with violence and life imprisonment).
